Our Finds
Umbria has come to be one of those very special places for us. No surprises when it’s an area built on a culture of good food, good wine and the joy of having both with friends in rather large quantities. Here’s a list of some of our favourite finds in case you are planning on extending your stay and please do reach out if you want any other tips.
SPELLO
One of the first places we visited in Umbria, we were blown away by how beautiful this often overlooked town is. We soon discovered that Spello, whilst special, is not unique and you’ll stumble across many beautiful towns in Umbria just like it! Grab a bar stool and some of the most delicious focaccia you’ve ever had in your life at Il Grottini.
PIENZA
A pilgrimage for any film fan and therefore a must visit for Charlie. We jumped off our bikes and hiked down the trail to recreate that iconic moment from Gladiator. The two photos are indistinguishable in our opinion. Russell Crowe, eat your heart out.
BAGNOREGIO
The night we got engaged, we stayed in Civita di Bagnoregio - a pretty magical hilltop town, only reachable by day and on foot. We celebrated with dinner at Alma Civita, a total gem in an ancient cave, over candlelight and incredible pasta. This little corner of Umbria will always be special to us, and somewhere we’d recommend to anyone!
COOKING COURSE
Head north to Lake Trasimeno where you’ll find Il Fontanaro Organic Farmhouse. Here Alina will teach you to make fresh pasta and Tuscan-inspired dishes. After cooking comes the best part: eating. Around her dining table, we enjoyed endless plates of pasta, plenty of wine, and one of our favourite meals. They also produce their own olive oil - don’t miss a tour of their groves.
TAKE A HIKE
Drive (or cycle) to Giano dell’Umbria and hike to the summit of Monte Martano - the very spot where Charlie proposed.
